Phone and credit card refund scams are on the rise

Phillips 66 has received several reports from sites that have fallen victim to credit card fraud via a telephone call to the store. The calls generally come in during the late night/early morning shift but could potentially take place at any time during operation hours.

The callers are claiming to be with point-of-sale support (Gilbarco, Verifone, Radiant, etc.) and they convince the cashier to perform some tasks on the EPOS in preparation for a technician visit. The callers may walk the cashier through some cash sales and refunds, but the intention of the call is to get the cashier to manually issue refunds to a credit card number they will provide.

Phillips 66 Fraud recommends the following:

  1. Never accept a card number over the phone for sales or refunds.
  2. A cashier should always get management approval prior to performing any tasks on the EPOS per a caller’s request.
  3. Request a case number from the caller and contact your EPOS support directly to confirm the case number with them.
  4. Contact local law enforcement to report the incident and provide the Phillips 66 Fraud Hotline number to the investigating officer.

Refunds cannot be reversed as Phillips 66 does not have access to cardholder’s accounts and cannot confirm whether the funds are still available. As a result, chargebacks to the merchant are very likely.

The Phillips 66 Fraud Hotline is 1-888-482-1838. Be sure to share this number with your employees so that everyone at your site(s) is aware of this type of fraud and understands what to do in the case of a fraud event.
