Phillips 66 has received several reports from stations that have fallen victim to credit card fraud via a telephone call to the store. The calls generally come in during the late night/early morning shift but could potentially take place at any time during operation hours.
The callers are claiming to be from the corporate office, law enforcement or with point-of-sale support (Gilbarco, Verifone, Radiant, etc.). They convince the cashier to perform some tasks on the point of sale in preparation for a technician visit or to assist in a law enforcement case. The callers may direct and walk the cashier through some cash sales and refunds, but the intention of the call is to get the cashier to manually issue refunds to a credit card number they will provide. They may also request a gift card activation for a specific amount and ask the cashier for the card number.
Phillips 66 Fraud recommends the following:
- Never accept a card number over the phone for sales or refunds.
- A cashier should always get management approval prior to performing any tasks on the point-of-sale system per a caller’s request.
- Request a case number from the caller and contact your point-of-sale support directly to confirm the case number with them.
- Contact local law enforcement to report the incident & provide the Phillips 66 Fraud Hotline number to the investigating officer.
Refunds cannot be reversed as PSX does not have access to cardholder’s accounts and cannot confirm whether the funds are still available. As a result, chargebacks to the merchant are very likely. Gift cards balances can be blocked for use but the sales can not be reversed to return the money to the store.
Please note that the Phillips 66 Help Desk is performing Conexxus 2 upgrades and EPOS software non-compliance informs via phone calls directly to sites. These calls are not fraudulent, and the Help Desk agent will never ask for any credit card information. Site personnel are encouraged to complete the required upgrade.
Manual Entries
Phillips 66 Fraud highly discourages the acceptance of manually entered card numbers at the POS terminals. Cards that cannot be chip read or mag stripe read are likely to result in fraud. Manual entry chargebacks have no recourse. The card brands automatically charge those back when disputes occur. The manual entry function can be disabled within the point of sale. Contact your vendor to assist with disabling that function.
