Branded sites see an uptick in credit card fraud

Phillips 66 has received several reports from stations that have fallen victim to credit card fraud via telephone calls to the store. These calls generally come in during the late night/early morning shift and are claiming to be from a corporate office or with a point-of-sale support company like Gilbarco, Verifone, Radiant, etc. The callers then walk the cashier through some cash sales and request an issued refund with the intention being to get the cashier to manually issue refunds to a credit card number they provide.

With gas prices where they currently are, these criminals can request more money from you without suspicion, so being aware of your surroundings and a little skepticism can go a long way for protecting your site(s). This type of fraud and prevention tips have already been communicated with you; however, because sites have experienced an uptick in fraudulent calls, Phillips 66 wanted to remind you and your employees of the following:

  1. Never accept a card number over the phone for sales or refunds.
  2. A cashier should always get management approval prior to performing any tasks on the point-of-sale system per a caller’s request.
  3. Request a case number from the caller and contact your point-of-sale support directly to confirm the case number with them.
  4. Contact local law enforcement to report the incident and provide the Phillips 66 Fraud Hotline number to the investigating officer.

Fraudulent acts like this drain your business of money, putting you at unexpected losses. In addition, these refunds cannot be reversed because Phillips 66 does not have access to cardholders’ accounts and cannot confirm whether the funds are still available. As a result, chargebacks to the merchant are highly likely.

If you think you have received a fraudulent call, the Phillips 66 Fraud Department can be reached at any time at  888-482-1838. If you can, save the number that called your business requesting a refund so you can report it to the Fraud Department.
