Discover the Dark Audit

Did you know that 49% of customers would skip their preferred gas station if it wasn’t well-lit at night?

In January, our Excellence in Action program introduced a site survey called the Dark Audit that examined how well-lit our stations are. To prepare for the 2025 Dark Audit, watch the video below to discover the most common lighting problems as well as how to fix them. Or, keep reading to see the high-level findings.

The Dark Audit’s Findings

  • The Dark Audit assessed eight key elements at every station nationwide.
  • Any infraction within the eight assessed elements resulted in that site failing the audit.
  • The overall pass rate for our branded stations was 41%.
  • MID lighting, canopy fascia light bar, and the light poles over the dispensers were the three lowest-performing lighting groups. (note: light poles were only considered in stations without a canopy)
  • When assessing the cure potential for a failing element of your station, you have two choices: to flip it or to fix it.
    • Flip it: Many lights are accidentally left off — a nightly checklist can help crew members remember to turn them on.
    • Fix it: Flickering or partially lit lights may have a larger electrical problem.
  • Lighting elements can sometimes be repaired through a warranty claim.
