Scammers are hoping consumers will insert their credit card in the credit card reader where they have installed a skimming device on the pin pad and credit card readers or internally behind the credit card reader. We have seen this recently in Southern California and now also in Colorado.
During routine daily inspections of your fuel dispensers, employees should look for a small hole that may be drilled into the Contactless credit card reader. If they find a hole drilled into the Contactless credit card reader, inspect both the Pin Pad and Credit Card readers for overlay skimmers, if the dispensers are the modern Gilbarco 500 and 700 series. If the dispensers are the older Gilbarco Advantage models, inspect inside for skimmers attached to the credit card readers or Crind Logic boards.
To inspect for pin pad overlays, look for the pin pad to be protruding out approximately 1/16” to 1/8” of an inch thicker when compared to the Pin Pad readers on other fuel dispensers. The EMV card readers are more difficult to detect since they fit flush on top of the existing reader.
